Amazon Product Images: The Rules That Win the Click

You can have the best keywords on Amazon and still lose, because the first thing a shopper judges is a thumbnail the size of a stamp. Images decide the click. Here’s what actually matters.

What makes a good Amazon product image?

A good Amazon main image shows only the product on a pure white background, fills most of the frame, and stays clear and recognizable at thumbnail size. Secondary images then do the selling, scale, features, use, and what’s in the box, answering the questions that would otherwise stop the purchase.

Main image rules (Amazon requires these)

  • Pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255).
  • Product only, no text, logos, badges, watermarks or props.
  • Fills at least 85% of the frame.
  • At least 1000px on the longest side so zoom works.
  • Real photo, not an illustration (for most categories).

Break these and Amazon can suppress your listing, so this is non-negotiable.

Secondary images do the selling

This is where you win. Use the extra slots for:

  • Scale, the product next to a hand or common object.
  • Features, call out what matters with short labels.
  • What’s in the box, set expectations, cut returns.
  • Lifestyle, the product in use, so buyers picture owning it.

The thumbnail is the real test

Most shoppers browse on mobile, where your main image is tiny. If it doesn’t read at thumbnail size, none of the detail matters. Design the main image to work small first, then check it looks right large.

Where images fit

Images are one of the six parts of listing optimization, and they pair with A+ content below the fold. If design isn’t your thing, our creative team builds images that hold up against the category leaders.

Frequently asked questions

What are Amazon's main image requirements?+
The main image must show the product only, on a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), filling at least 85% of the frame, with no text, logos, badges or props. It should be at least 1000px on the longest side for zoom.
How many images should an Amazon listing have?+
Use all the slots you can, typically seven. One clean main image, then secondary images for scale, features, what's in the box, and lifestyle context. Every empty slot is a question left unanswered.
Do Amazon images affect ranking?+
Not directly, but they drive click-through and conversion, and those signals do affect ranking. A better main image lifts clicks, which lifts sales, which lifts your position. Images are indirect SEO.
