Individual vs Professional Amazon Seller Account: Which to Pick

Amazon offers two selling plans, and the choice comes down to one thing: how much you plan to sell. Here’s the quick comparison.

Individual vs Professional: which should you pick?

Choose Professional if you’ll sell more than about 40 items a month or want ads, bulk tools and Brand Registry features. Choose Individual if you’re testing the waters at very low volume, since it has no monthly fee. You can switch anytime, so it’s not a permanent decision.

The Individual plan

No monthly subscription, but roughly $0.99 per item sold (check current rates). No access to advertising, bulk listing tools, or some restricted categories. Fine for testing an idea or selling a handful of items.

The Professional plan

About $39.99 a month with no per-item fee. Unlocks:

  • Advertising (Sponsored Products and more)
  • Bulk listing and inventory tools
  • Eligibility for more categories
  • The reporting most sellers need to grow

A simple rule

Do the math on volume. At ~40+ sales a month, the Individual per-item fee costs more than the Professional subscription, so Professional wins on price alone, before you even count the extra tools. Below that, and if you don’t need ads yet, Individual is fine to start.

Once you’ve chosen

Move on to creating your Seller Central account, then decide FBA or FBM. New to all of this? Start with how to start selling on Amazon.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Individual and Professional Amazon accounts?+
Individual has no monthly fee but charges about $0.99 per item sold and lacks advanced tools. Professional costs around $39.99 a month with no per-item fee and unlocks ads, bulk tools, and more categories. (Check current rates.)
When should I switch to a Professional account?+
When you sell more than about 40 items a month, Professional is cheaper because the per-item fee would otherwise exceed the monthly cost. You also need Professional to run ads and use Brand Registry features.
Can I change my Amazon plan later?+
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade between Individual and Professional anytime in your account settings, so starting on Individual doesn't lock you in.
